Carotid Ultrasounds Q & A

What is a carotid ultrasound?

You have two carotid arteries, one on each side of your neck, that transfer blood from your heart to your brain.

A carotid ultrasound is a painless procedure that examines the blood flow through your carotid arteries. Tests show if there’s a blockage or a narrowing of the carotid arteries, which determines if you’re at risk for stroke.

A carotid ultrasound can also check the following:

  • Blood flow through the artery after a surgery
  • Placement and effectiveness of a stent
  • Detection of a blood clot

If your doctor sees that your carotid arteries aren’t functioning at their highest potential, treatment can begin immediately to ward off the possibility of more serious issues.

What are the signs that I need to get a carotid ultrasound?

You may need a carotid ultrasound if you’re experiencing the following symptoms:

  • Blurred vision
  • Confusion
  • Slurred speech
  • Migraines
  • Numbness in your face
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of balance

In addition, you may need a carotid ultrasound if you suffer from certain conditions, including:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Recent transient ischemic attack (TIA)
  • Family history of heart disease or stroke

See your doctor at Sunshine Walk-In Clinic if you have any symptoms that cause alarm. A carotid ultrasound can help get to the root of your issue so a treatment plan can be provided.

How does a carotid ultrasound work?

When you visit Sunshine Walk-In Clinic for your test, your practitioner applies a warm gel to your skin above each carotid artery on your neck. The gel is used to transmit ultrasound waves back and forth.

The testing begins with a small device called a transducer, which emits soundwaves to record the echo of waves bouncing off your tissues, organs, and blood cells. The transducer is gently pressed against each side of your neck.

A computer then reads the soundwaves and converts them into a live-action monitor that shows the rate of blood flow through the arteries. The pain-free procedure takes about 30 minutes.
